"The absolutism of the key tenets of neoliberalism: privatisation, deregulation, balanced budgets have been rejected by all but the most dogmatic. Apart from one - the primacy of free trade."

Noreena Hertz, 1 April 2009

Today's dominant trade patterns and policies are fundamentally unsustainable and unfair. Friends of the Earth Europe believes alternative, equitable and environmentally sound approaches to trade are possible.

As the world's largest trading bloc, the European Union plays a major role in global trade negotiations. FoEE is seriously concerned about the current position of the EU in the World Trade Organization and in bilateral 'free trade' agreements. This position, based on the 'Global Europe' doctrine, puts forward an ideological 'competitiveness' agenda which promotes deregulation and a narrow 'market access' approach to trade. "Trade expansion" is viewed as an end in itself which is per se beneficial to society.

In contradiction with its multilateralist rhetoric, the EU has become the world champion in bilateral trade agreements, fuelling a snowballing mad race for markets and natural resources.

Friends of the Earth Europe believes that the EU must review its overall position and take a lead role in fundamental changes to the world trading system in line with its sustainable development and poverty eradication objectives.

Selling Away Our Natural Resources

In a time where a series of systemic crises of our "growth economy" are unfolding, more and more people around the world want their governments to move away from outdated and corporate-driven "ultraliberal" or "neomercantilist" strategies, as they feel the detrimental impacts of unfair trade policies on social and community rights, wealth distribution, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaption policies, and the preservation of natural resources.

Already today the implementation of existing WTO agreements and institutional procedures are undermining environmental and social standards. Now is the time for review and for repair. Now is the time to develop a more sustainable, democratic and equitable trading system for the 21st century in harmony with the limits of our planet and with people's needs and dreams.
